Q: What type of aid is available to pay for college?

A: Grants, scholarships, work-study and loans.

Grants and scholarships can come from the federal or state government, colleges, or private/non-profit organizations and are often called “gift aid” because they don’t need to be repaid.

Pell Grant is the most common federal grant and is typically awarded based on financial need.  Pell Grants do not need to be paid back (with some exceptions).

Scholarships can be awarded based on need, or merit and similar to grants, do not need to be paid back.

Federal Work-study allows a student to work part-time to earn money to help pay for educational expenses.

Loans are money you borrow and need to pay back with interest. Federal student loans usually have more benefits than loans from banks and should be the last option when funding your college education.

Q: How do I know if I am eligible for federal financial aid?

A: In order to determine whether you are eligible for a federal grant, you will need to start by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Form. This form is also used by many college financial aid staff in awarding grant money.

Q: When can I apply for federal financial aid?

A: The FAFSA form is available on October 1st. We recommend applying as early as possible to maximize your chances for aid. Be sure to check the deadlines for filing, as they vary by state. You can apply and find the deadlines at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.

Q: How will I know if I qualify for federal financial aid?

A: Once you complete the FAFSA, you will receive your “Student Aid Index” (SAI). The SAI is calculated using the information provided when completing the FAFSA® and is an indicator of the financial need and a number used by colleges to determine federal student aid eligibility.  Those families with an SAI of “0” will have the most need.

Q: How much can I receive?

A: The amount of federal financial aid will vary based on the answers you provide on the FAFSA Form. Once the college receives all necessary information from the application you complete, they will determine your eligibility and send you a financial aid award letter.

Q:  Is there a maximum amount for the Federal Pell Grant I can receive?

A: The maximum Federal Pell Grant amount can change each year. The 2023-2024 year, the Pell Grant maximum is $7,395.00.
